About Annapurna Himal
The Annapurna Himal is a major subrange of the central Himalayas, located in north-central Nepal, stretching east of the Dhaulagiri Himal and west of the Manaslu region. The range is best known for Annapurna I (8,091 meters)âthe tenth-highest mountain in the world and one of the most technically challenging 8,000-meter peaks. Renowned for its dramatic relief, the Annapurna Himal features deep river gorges, towering rock and ice faces, vast glaciers, and diverse climatic zones. The region is home to several prominent peaks including Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Machapuchare (Fishtail), and Tilicho Peak, making it one of Nepalâs most varied and visually striking mountain ranges. The Annapurna Himal lies within the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepalâs largest protected area, which spans from subtropical forests to high alpine terrain. This ecological diversity, combined with rich Gurung and Thakali cultures, has made the region one of the most important trekking and mountaineering destinations in the Himalayas. While popular trekking routes such as the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp attract visitors from around the world, the Annapurna Himal remains a serious arena for high-altitude expeditions, offering challenging ascents, complex weather systems, and true alpine adventure.
