Trek Overview

What is the Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is the finest short high-altitude trek in Nepal — a quiet, uncrowded ridge route through six climatic zones in the Annapurna Conservation Area, reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500 m / 14,764 ft in just five days of walking. The trek climbs the southeast ridge of Machhapuchhre, delivering some of the closest views of the sacred Fishtail peak (6,993 m) available anywhere in Nepal, alongside Annapurna South (7,219 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m) and Mardi Himal (5,587 m) at the head of the valley. Mardi Himal Base Camp is one of the most scenically positioned camps in the entire Annapurna region.

The route begins with a one-hour drive from Pokhara to the Kande trailhead (1,770 m / 5,807 ft), then climbs through dense hemlock, oak and rhododendron forest to Forest Camp (2,550 m), Low Camp (2,985 m), Badal Danda (3,210 m) and High Camp (3,580 m), before the final push to Base Camp. In contrast with the busy Modi Khola valley of the Annapurna Base Camp trek, the Mardi Himal ridge trail is refreshingly uncrowded — from Low Camp upward, the views are almost uninterrupted and the mountain feels genuinely yours. The loop return via Siding village (1,740 m) completes a one-way circuit through Gurung cardamom plantations and traditional teahouse culture.

One permit is required: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). No crampons, no technical skills, no camping — comfortable teahouses are available at every camp to Base Camp. This is the best short Himalayan value trek available from Pokhara and AltiPro brings the same quality of guiding and logistics to Mardi Himal as they do to their 8,000 m expeditions.

Why Trek Mardi Himal with AltiPro Adventures?

Six Climatic Zones in Five Days

From subtropical forest to temperate, subalpine, alpine, glacial and nival conditions — packed into a shorter horizontal distance than anywhere else in Nepal. The scenery transforms visibly with every hour of ascent, making Mardi Himal one of the most varied short treks in the Himalaya.

Close-Range Machhapuchhre Views

The Mardi Himal trail crosses the southeast ridge immediately beneath the sacred Fishtail Mountain. Views of Machhapuchhre (6,993 m) from High Camp and Base Camp come closer to the skyline than on any other standard trek in Nepal. No other route puts you so near to Nepal's most iconic peak.

Uncrowded Ridge Trail

While the Annapurna Base Camp trail through the Modi Khola valley is one of the busiest in Nepal during peak season, the Mardi Himal ridge route is quiet, unhurried and refreshingly uncrowded. At High Camp and Base Camp you share the mountain with very few others — a genuinely intimate Himalayan experience.

One Hour from Pokhara

The Pokhara lakeside to Kande trailhead is just a one-hour drive. No flights, no long journeys, no weather-related delays. Mardi Himal is the easiest high-altitude mountain experience accessible from any major city in Nepal — one hour from lakeside to Himalayan forest.

Nepal's National Bird — Danphe Habitat

The rhododendron and hemlock forest between Kande and Forest Camp is prime habitat for the Danphe (Himalayan Monal) — Nepal's national bird and one of the most brilliantly coloured birds in the Himalaya. AltiPro guides know exactly where to look, and sightings on the morning ascent to Forest Camp are frequent in spring.

Loop Route via Siding Village

The return descends from High Camp to the traditional Gurung settlement of Siding (1,740 m), through cardamom plantations and warm teahouse hospitality, then continues to Lwang and Lumre at the road. AltiPro recommends the full loop — the Siding descent adds Gurung village culture that the ridge route alone cannot provide.

Mardi Himal Trek Route & Approach

The route begins with a one-hour drive from Pokhara to the Kande trailhead (1,770 m). From Kande the trail climbs through Australian Camp (2,060 m) and Pitam Deurali (1,990 m) to Forest Camp (2,550 m), then above the treeline to Low Camp (2,985 m), Badal Danda (3,210 m), High Camp (3,580 m), and finally Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m). The return descends via High Camp to Siding village (1,740 m), then drives back to Pokhara from Lwang or Lumre, completing the full loop.

1

Pokhara → Kande (1,770 m) → Forest Camp (2,550 m)

One hour drive to the Kande trailhead. The trail climbs stone steps to Australian Camp (2,060 m) — first views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South — then via Pitam Deurali (1,990 m) into the thick hemlock, oak and rhododendron forest. Forest Camp (2,550 m) is a comfortable teahouse settlement in the forest where the Danphe (Himalayan Monal) is frequently spotted in spring. 4–5 hrs walking.

2

Forest Camp → Low Camp (2,985 m)

The upper forest transitions from rhododendron to mossy, lichen-covered trees as the trail climbs to Low Camp (2,985 m) at the treeline. The ridge opens to the first unobstructed views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. This is where the Mardi Himal trek transforms from forest walk to high-altitude ridge experience. 3–4 hrs walking.

3

Low Camp → Badal Danda (3,210 m) → High Camp (3,580 m)

Badal Danda (Cloud Ridge) at 3,210 m delivers a sweeping open panorama of the entire Annapurna range — Annapurna I, II, III, South, Machhapuchhre and Gangapurna on a clear day. Continue up the open ridge to High Camp (3,580 m) — the most conveniently placed teahouses of the trek, with views stretching all the way to Pokhara's Phewa Valley below. 4–5 hrs walking.

4

High Camp → Upper Viewpoint (4,200 m) → Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m)

The finest day of the trek — an early start (5–6 AM recommended to beat the clouds). The ridge narrows above High Camp as you climb through open rocky terrain to the Upper Viewpoint at 4,200 m — the sharpest panoramic position on the route. A final scramble delivers Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4,500 m, directly beneath the south face of Machhapuchhre and the Mardi Himal massif. The full Annapurna range stands before you. Descend to High Camp or Low Camp. 7–9 hrs total.

5

High Camp → Siding Village (1,740 m) → Drive to Pokhara

Descend from High Camp through Low Camp to the traditional Gurung settlement of Siding (1,740 m), passing through cardamom plantations and warm teahouse hospitality that the ridge route above cannot offer. Drive from Lwang or Lumre back to Pokhara. The loop return — different from the ascent route — is AltiPro's recommended finish to the Mardi Himal circuit. 5–6 hrs walking.

How Difficult is the Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate trek and the best short high-altitude option for first-time Himalayan trekkers with good hill walking fitness. No technical skills, crampons or prior trekking experience are required. The most demanding sections are High Camp to Upper Viewpoint (620 m ascent on open ridge) and Pitam Deurali to Forest Camp. Both are walkable at a steady pace by fit trekkers. The altitude of 4,500 m at Base Camp is significant — the graduated ascent profile naturally builds acclimatisation, and AltiPro guides monitor the pace carefully throughout.

Ideal season Possible Not recommended

Spring (March–May): The primary Mardi Himal season. Rhododendrons burn red and pink between Kande and Forest Camp from late March through April — the best time to see the Danphe (Himalayan Monal), which is most active in spring. Clear morning skies deliver exceptional views at High Camp and Base Camp, with mild temperatures on the ridge. May brings warmer conditions but cloud can build by afternoon — an early Base Camp start is especially important. AltiPro strongly recommends a pre-dawn departure in May.

Autumn (October–November): Post-monsoon autumn delivers the clearest skies and finest mountain visibility of the year from High Camp and Base Camp. October and November are the most stable months with outstanding views across the full Annapurna range. Rhododendron forest turns copper and gold on the lower slopes. Nights above 3,500 m are cold in November (below –5°C) — warm sleeping bags are essential. AltiPro recommends autumn as the ideal season for photography.

Mardi Himal Trek — FAQs

Find answers to common questions about the Mardi Himal Trek.

Is the Mardi Himal Trek suitable for beginners?

Yes — the Mardi Himal Trek is one of the best first Himalayan treks available. No technical skills, crampons or prior trekking experience are required. Walking fitness (5–6 hours per day on steep, uneven terrain) and basic altitude awareness are the primary requirements. The graduated ascent naturally builds acclimatisation. AltiPro paces the trek to each group's fitness level.

What is the Mardi Himal Base Camp elevation?

Mardi Himal Base Camp sits at 4,500 m / 14,764 ft above sea level — the highest point on the standard trek. The Upper Viewpoint at 4,200 m, reached on the way to Base Camp, is the best panoramic viewpoint on the route. Most trekkers sleep at High Camp (3,580 m) the night before the Base Camp push.

How many days is the Mardi Himal Trek?

The AltiPro Mardi Himal Trek runs 11 days total, including arrival in Kathmandu, fly/drive to Pokhara, 7 days of trekking (Kande to Base Camp and return via Siding), buffer days, farewell dinner and departure. The active trekking section is 7 days. A shorter 5–6 day version is available, but AltiPro recommends the full schedule for the most enjoyable and sustainable pace.

What permits are required for the Mardi Himal Trek?

One permit is required: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), costing NPR 3,000 (USD 22–25) per person for non-SAARC nationals. Under Nepal's 2025 trekking regulations, TIMS is no longer required for trekkers with a licensed guide. A licensed guide is mandatory on all Nepal trekking routes. AltiPro arranges the ACAP permit and licensed guide in Kathmandu before departure.

What is the best time for the Mardi Himal Trek?

Spring (March–May) and Autumn (October–November) are both excellent seasons. Spring brings rhododendron blooms and Danphe (Himalayan Monal) sightings in the lower forest — the best season for wildlife. Autumn delivers the clearest skies and finest mountain views from High Camp and Base Camp. AltiPro operates both seasons with full support. Winter trekking (December–February) is available for experienced trekkers seeking solitude.

How does Mardi Himal compare to the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

Both reach similar altitudes in the Annapurna region but offer completely different experiences. Mardi Himal (4,500 m) climbs a high, exposed and uncrowded ridgeline with closer views of Machhapuchhre than any other standard trek. ABC (4,130 m) leads into an enclosed glacier amphitheatre. Mardi Himal takes 7–9 days; ABC takes 13–17 days. If you have limited time, want mountain views without the crowds, and prefer a ridge trail over a valley route, Mardi Himal is the better choice.

What wildlife can I see on the Mardi Himal Trek?

The forest between Kande and Forest Camp is prime wildlife habitat. In spring, the Danphe (Himalayan Monal — Nepal's national bird) is frequently spotted in the rhododendron and hemlock forest. Langur monkeys are common in the lower sections. Himalayan tahr graze on the open slopes above Low Camp. Red pandas have been seen near Forest Camp in the bamboo and rhododendron zone.

What is the loop return route via Siding Village?

The standard AltiPro itinerary descends from High Camp via Low Camp to Siding village (1,740 m) — a traditional Gurung community with cardamom farms and warm teahouse hospitality. From Siding the trail continues through Lwang to Lumre, where a vehicle returns you to Pokhara. The loop avoids retracing the entire ascent route and introduces the Gurung cultural landscape of the lower valley that the ridge trail alone cannot offer.

Is there teahouse accommodation at every camp?

Yes — the Mardi Himal Trek is a fully teahouse trek. Comfortable lodges are available at Australian Camp, Forest Camp, Low Camp, Badal Danda, High Camp and even at Base Camp on some trips. Rooms are basic, cosy and practical. Nights above Forest Camp are cold, falling well below 0°C at High Camp — a sleeping bag rated at least –10°C is essential. Hot showers and device charging are available at most stops for an additional fee.

What is the Mardi Himal Trek cost?

Cost depends on group size, departure date and service level. All AltiPro packages include the ACAP permit, Kathmandu and Pokhara hotels, domestic flight or transport, private jeep to Kande and return from Siding, licensed guide and porter, full board teahouse accommodation and emergency evacuation standby. Request a customised quote from our team.
