Pisang Peak Expedition
Expedition Overview
What is the Pisang Peak Expedition?
Pisang Peak (6,091m / 19,984ft) stands as an ideal pyramid above Pisang village of Manang district, in the northern part of Nepal and is the most popular trekking peak in the Annapurna Conservation Area. It is situated between Chame and Manang on the classic Annapurna Circuit trail, and was first scaled by a German group in 1955. Alpine Grade PD, it is easily accessible for fit trekkers with basic mountaineering preparation, yet is not too difficult for those who are more advanced.
The Pisang Peak expedition follows the route of Annapurna Circuit, one of the most hiked routes in the world, from Besisahar along the Marsyangdi River valley through a variety of landscapes from subtropical forests, to terraced farmland, and the dramatic high-altitude arid landscapes of the upper Manang Valley. The mountain stands directly above the stone villages of Pisang and Ghyaru, from the Tibetan influence, in an amazing Himalayan landscape.
The numbers of climbers are kept small by the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and NMA climbing royalty, but Pisang's location on the popular Circuit does attract an active international climbing community. It is the natural first peak for trekkers who want to take their trekking experience to the level of mountaineering and it is a good warm up before the more challenging summits such as Ama Dablam (6,812m / 22,349ft) or Himlung Himal (7,126m / 23,379ft).
Why Climb Pisang Peak?
For trekkers who are starting to mountain climb, Pisang Peak is the perfect first high altitude goal. For those who have not gained experience at elevations above 5,000m, it is recommended that they make a challenging trek in the Himalayas first. If you are ready to climb higher, here are some reasons why Pisang Peak climbing in Nepal is one of the best 6,000m peaks to climb:
A True Pyramid Summit
The symmetrical, pyramid-shaped summit of Pisang is one of the most visually striking in the Annapurna region and a clean, well-defined ridgeline leading to a true high altitude summit at 6,091m / 19,984ft.
Annapurna Circuit Integration
The Pisang Peak expedition is uniquely combined with the world-renowned Annapurna Circuit trek, crossing Thorong La (5,416m) after reaching the top and completing one of the great trekking routes in the Himalayas.
Panoramic Annapurna Views
From the top, you can see Annapurna II (7,937m), Annapurna IV (7,525m), Manaslu (8,163m), Tilicho Peak (7,134m) and Gangapurna (7,455m) in a continuous line stretching across the Himalayas.
Ideal First Mountaineering Peak
The Pisang Peak elevation of 6,091m and the Grade PD route make it the most approachable genuine six-thousander on the Annapurna Circuit — perfect bridging between trekking and technical mountaineering.
Rich Manang Valley Culture
The route traverses the Tibetan-influenced villages of Pisang, Ghyaru and Ngawal, ancient stone villages where the centuries-old Tibetan culture remains intact along the high Manang Valley.
Well-Defined Technical Route
A good ridge line and two camps set up with a final 55-degree snow and ice section to the summit. The challenge is not too hard, not too easy — it is real mountaineering that develops the skills for harder challenges ahead.
Pisang Peak Route & Approach
The climb to Pisang follows the Southwest Ridge which is the only and standard commercial climbing route on the mountain. The expedition starts from Besisahar (850m / 2,789ft) through the traditional route of Annapurna Circuit passing through the valley of the Marsyangdi to reach Pisang village. Thereafter, two high camps are set up on the South-West Ridge prior to the summit push. AltiPro climbers prepare and fix all ropes and set up all camps before the summit push.
Kathmandu to Besisahar via Drive — Marsyangdi Valley Approach
Take the Prithvi Highway from Kathmandu to Besisahar (850m) which takes about 7–8 hours. As you leave the Kathmandu valley, the Marsyangdi valley gradually widens and crosses through the Gurung villages of the lower foothills of Annapurna. This is the beginning point of the classic approach trail Annapurna Circuit.
Besisahar to Chame to Pisang (3,300m / 10,827ft)
Take the Annapurna Circuit route north through Jagat, Dharapani and Chame (2,670m), eventually through more and more dramatic gorge views until you reach the subtropical forest. At 3,300m reach the last major village before the mountain, Upper Pisang. From here, the southern horizon is dominated by Annapurna II.
Base Camp — 4,380m / 14,370ft
The trail from Pisang leads up through a few scattered pine trees and alpine pastures to a Kharka (yak pasture) at 4,380m — the perfect Base Camp spot with a clear view of the mountain above. AltiPro sets up a complete camp with tents here. Acclimatisation hikes and gear preparation occur on a rest day prior to a move up in elevation.
High Camp — 5,400m / 17,717ft
As the South-West Ridge narrows, the trail gets rockier and more exposed from Base Camp. High Camp is located on a shoulder of the ridge at 5,400m with a panoramic view of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. This is the final station en route to the top. The weather is cold and windy here — full expedition equipment is necessary.
Summit — 6,091m / 19,984ft
Early morning leave from High Camp. The path leads up the clearly marked upper Southwest Ridge to the last snow and ice slope, a steep continuous wall of 55° with crampons, ice axe and fixed rope needed. The Pisang Peak summit at 6,091m / 19,984ft offers unobstructed views of Annapurna II, IV, Manaslu, Tilicho and Gangapurna. Round trip from High Camp: approximately 7–9 hours. The way back to Base Camp is on the same track.
How Difficult is the Pisang Peak Climb?
Pisang Peak is an Alpine Grade PD and is not for complete beginners. Some previous trekking experience on high ground (above 4,000m) and basic knowledge of crampons are required. No previous roped climbing experience is required, but the final slope is steep (55°), and technique is needed. It is the perfect first peak for trekkers who have already done an Annapurna Circuit trek and are looking to take the next step into real mountaineering mode, and then on to more difficult peaks like Mera Peak (6,476m / 21,247ft) and Ama Dablam.
The upper slope of the Pisang Peak is 55 degrees and the exposed ridge requires full technical commitment above 5,800m, which is lower than the 7,000m peaks. Altitude, wind and cold at High Camp poses conditions which physical fitness cannot cope with. AltiPro's two-camp approach and built-in rest days are geared towards helping each climber get to the top.
Best Season for Pisang Peak Expedition
The climbing season of the Pisang Peak is good, with two good seasons. The Annapurna Circuit and peak climbing is most popular in spring and autumn — both offer excellent stability and clarity. AltiPro provides full expedition services in both windows.
Spring (April–May): The best time to go on a Pisang Peak expedition in Nepal. The pre-monsoon weather provides stable conditions, relatively cool temperatures at High Camp and the rhododendron forests in the lower Marsyangdi valley are in full bloom. The majority of people on the Annapurna Circuit trek will be in April or early May. Slots book up quickly, so it is crucial to book early.
Autumn (October–November): The Manang Valley is exceptionally clear in the post-monsoon autumn season. The snow has settled on the Southwest Ridge, views of the summits are at their best, and the cultural experience of trekking the Annapurna Circuit has an unhurried feel. Great for fewer crowds on the trail.
