Chulu West Expedition
Expedition Overview
What is the Chulu West Expedition?
Chulu West stands at 6,419 metres in the Manang district of Nepal, rising above the Annapurna Circuit trail as the higher-profile neighbour of Chulu East and Chulu Far East in the same Damodar Himal massif. Classified as an NMA trekking peak, Chulu West is more technical than Island Peak or Mera Peak, with an ice wall and glacier ridge on its upper section, but remains accessible to strong trekkers with some prior mountaineering exposure rather than requiring advanced technical credentials.
AltiPro's Chulu West Expedition follows the classic Annapurna Circuit through Besisahar, Chame, and Pisang to Manang, before branching to a dedicated Base Camp at approximately 4,900m below the mountain's southeast approach. Above Base Camp, the route negotiates steep, loose rock protected by fixed rope before opening onto a glacier ridge and ice wall leading to the summit at 6,419m. Descent continues over the Thorong La at 5,416m toward Muktinath, combining the peak climb with one of Nepal's most celebrated high passes. The expedition spans 18 days from Kathmandu to return.
Chulu West is rated Moderate to Challenging. AltiPro recommends prior high-altitude trekking experience and solid crampon and ice axe technique; climbers without any mountaineering background should consider a less technical objective first. It is not an appropriate first Himalayan climb for someone with no prior trekking-peak or high-altitude experience, though it is well suited to strong trekkers taking their next step.
About Chulu West — The Higher Face of the Chulu Massif
Chulu West rises directly above the Annapurna Circuit trail as it climbs toward Manang, its west face rising a dramatic 1,300 metres in barely a kilometre above the valley floor. The mountain sits within the Annapurna Conservation Area, in the same massif as Chulu East and Chulu Far East, though each peak is climbed via its own separate route and Base Camp.
Because the approach follows the Annapurna Circuit itself, climbing Chulu West is, in practice, a full Annapurna Circuit trek with a dedicated summit attempt and a Thorong La crossing built in. This makes it one of the more complete single-trip Himalayan experiences available in the Annapurna region, combining valley trekking, technical peak climbing, and a classic high-altitude pass into one expedition.
From the summit, climbers look south across the entire Manang valley to a wall of ice formed by Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak, with the Annapurna Circuit trail visible far below.
Why Choose AltiPro Adventures for Chulu West?
A Genuine Step Up from Standard Trekking Peaks
Chulu West's ice wall and glacier ridge make it more demanding than Island Peak or Mera Peak, giving strong trekkers a real next objective. AltiPro's Sherpa guides run crampon and ice axe training at Base Camp before the technical section begins.
A Complete Annapurna Circuit Experience
AltiPro's standard itinerary combines the full Annapurna Circuit Trek with the Chulu West summit and a Thorong La crossing, the most ambitious single-trip combination available in the region.
Fixed-Rope Support on the Technical Section
The steep, loose rock above Base Camp is protected with fixed rope placed by AltiPro's climbing Sherpas, keeping the technical crux of the climb well managed for strong trekkers stepping up in difficulty.
Full Sherpa Support and Equipment
All technical summit equipment is provided by AltiPro: crampons, harness, ice axe, helmet, and rope, along with cook staff at Base Camp. Climbers do not need to own or bring technical climbing gear.
Medical Support
A full medical kit at Base Camp, with satellite communication for emergency coordination. Helicopter evacuation to Manang, Pokhara, or Kathmandu can be arranged if required during the expedition.
Spring and Autumn Options
AltiPro operates Chulu West in both spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), the two stable weather windows for the Manang valley and the Thorong La crossing.
The Southeast Approach Route (6,419 m)
The standard route on Chulu West follows the Annapurna Circuit before branching to a dedicated Base Camp and climbing the mountain's ice wall and glacier ridge, finishing with a Thorong La crossing on descent.
Kathmandu to Chame via Besisahar (760m to 2,710m)
Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, then continue by jeep along the Marshyangdi valley to Chame, the administrative headquarters of the Manang district.
Chame to Manang via Pisang (2,710m to 3,540m)
The trail climbs through pine forest and past the striking Paungda Danda rock face to Pisang, then continues along the upper Marshyangdi valley to Manang, with an acclimatization day built in.
Manang to Chulu West Base Camp via Ledar (3,540m to 4,900m)
The route leaves the main Annapurna Circuit trail above Manang, climbing through Ledar before branching toward Chulu West Base Camp on the mountain's southeast flank.
Base Camp to Summit (4,900m to 6,419m)
Above Base Camp, steep loose rock requires fixed rope before the route opens onto a glacier ridge and ice wall leading to the summit at 6,419m. The descent retraces the route to Base Camp before rejoining the Annapurna Circuit trail.
Cross the Thorong La to Muktinath (4,900m to 5,416m to 3,760m)
From the Manang side, the route climbs to the Thorong La at 5,416m, one of Nepal's highest trekking passes, before descending to the pilgrimage town of Muktinath, completing the classic pass-to-pass crossing.
How Difficult is the Chulu West Expedition?
Chulu West is graded Moderate to Challenging, involving an ice wall, glacier ridge, and sections of fixed-rope rock climbing above Base Camp. It is considered more technical than Island Peak or Mera Peak, broadly comparable to Pisang Peak in overall demand but with a more sustained technical section near the summit.
Best Season for the Chulu West Expedition
Spring (March–May): Stable pre-monsoon conditions with clear views across the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. Manang sits in a rain shadow, so trail conditions on the approach are generally reliable.
Autumn (September–November): Crisp post-monsoon conditions with excellent visibility for the summit and the Thorong La crossing. October and November are considered the ideal months. AltiPro operates both seasons, contact for current dates.

Is Chulu West a good first 6,000m peak?

What is the difference between Chulu West and Chulu East?
Chulu West (6,419m) and Chulu East (6,584m NMA permit elevation) are separate summits in the same massif, each climbed via its own route and Base Camp. Chulu West involves a more sustained technical section with an ice wall and glacier ridge, while Chulu East is a longer, higher approach with its own distinct technical crux.
Can Chulu West be combined with the Annapurna Circuit and Thorong La?
Yes. AltiPro's standard itinerary follows the full Annapurna Circuit Trek to Manang, includes the Chulu West summit attempt, and continues over the Thorong La to Muktinath, combining trekking, peak climbing, and a classic high pass into one expedition.
What technical skills are needed to climb Chulu West?
Solid crampon and ice axe technique, comfort on a fixed-rope rock section, and roped glacier travel are all essential. AltiPro's Sherpa guides run technical training at Base Camp before the summit push.
How long is the Chulu West expedition?
18 days from Kathmandu to return, including the drive to Chame, the Annapurna Circuit approach through Pisang and Manang, the summit attempt on Chulu West (6,419m), and the descent over the Thorong La to Muktinath.
What are the summit views like from Chulu West?
The summit looks south across the entire Manang valley to a wall of ice formed by Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak, with the Annapurna Circuit trail visible far below.
