Expedition Overview

Expedition Overview

What is the Larkya Peak Expedition?

Larkya Peak stands at approximately 6,249 metres in the Gorkha region of Nepal, rising as a right-hand sub-peak of the mighty Manaslu massif, directly above the famous Larkya La Pass. Classified as an NMA trekking peak, Larkya Peak sits within the restricted Manaslu Conservation Area, on the classic Manaslu Circuit route between the Gorkha and Manang districts, and is climbed by a fraction of the trekkers who cross the pass beneath it each season.

AltiPro's Larkya Peak Expedition follows the full Manaslu Circuit trail from Soti Khola through Jagat, Namrung, Lho, and Samagaon, gaining altitude gradually alongside the Budhi Gandaki river before reaching Samdo and a dedicated Base Camp below the peak. From Base Camp, the route to the summit involves basic glacier and snow travel using crampons, ice axe, and rope, with no advanced technical climbing required. The expedition spans 20 days from Kathmandu to return, and can conclude either by retracing the approach or by continuing over the Larkya La itself toward Bimtang and Dharapani.

Larkya Peak is rated Moderate. AltiPro recommends prior high-altitude trekking experience and basic familiarity with crampons and ice axe use, though no advanced mountaineering background is required. The main demands are the long approach through a genuinely remote restricted region and sustained altitude exposure above 5,000m, making Larkya Peak a well-regarded warm-up climb for those planning a future Manaslu expedition.

About Larkya Peak

About Larkya Peak — Manaslu's Quiet Neighbour Above the Larkya La

Larkya Peak rises directly above the Larkya La, the high pass at 5,106m that forms the centrepiece of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Every trekker crossing the pass looks up at the mountain, yet very few continue on to actually climb it, which makes Larkya Peak one of the more genuinely quiet summits available to climbers in Nepal's restricted areas.

The approach shares its entire route with the standard Manaslu Circuit, following the Budhi Gandaki river through Machha Khola, Jagat, Deng, Namrung, and Lho before reaching Samagaon, the traditional gateway village to Manaslu Base Camp itself, and continuing to Samdo near the Tibetan border. Because of this shared route, climbing Larkya Peak is, in practice, a Manaslu Circuit trek with a dedicated summit attempt built in near its highest point.

From the summit, climbers are rewarded with a close panorama of Manaslu itself, alongside Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Naike Peak, and Cheo Himal, with the Larkya La and the onward trail toward Bimtang visible directly below.

Why Choose AltiPro

Why Choose AltiPro Adventures for Larkya Peak?

A Genuine Manaslu Warm-Up Climb

Larkya Peak's basic snow and glacier travel, combined with sustained altitude above 5,000m, makes it a well-suited preparation climb for anyone considering a future Manaslu expedition. AltiPro's Sherpa guides teach crampon and ice axe technique at Base Camp for climbers building toward bigger objectives.

One of Nepal's Quieter Restricted-Area Climbs

Because so few Manaslu Circuit trekkers attempt the summit, Larkya Peak offers a genuinely uncrowded high-altitude experience compared to the Khumbu's busier trekking peaks, while still following a well-established and logistically supported trail.

Combine with the Full Manaslu Circuit

AltiPro's standard itinerary follows the complete Manaslu Circuit Trek, and can continue over the Larkya La toward Bimtang and Dharapani, linking naturally into the Annapurna Circuit region on the descent.

Full Sherpa Support and Equipment

All technical summit equipment is provided by AltiPro: crampons, harness, ice axe, and rope, along with cook staff at Base Camp. Climbers do not need to own or bring technical climbing gear.

Medical Support

A full medical kit at Base Camp, with satellite communication for emergency coordination. Helicopter evacuation to Kathmandu can be arranged if required during the expedition.

Spring and Autumn Options

AltiPro operates Larkya Peak in both spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), the two stable weather windows for the Manaslu region and the Larkya La.

Route & Approach

The Northeast Approach Route (6,249 m)

The standard route on Larkya Peak follows the full Manaslu Circuit trail before branching to a dedicated Base Camp near Samdo, with a comparatively straightforward glacier and snow climb to the summit.

1

Kathmandu to Soti Khola (1,400m to 700m)

Drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola, the starting point of the Manaslu Circuit trail along the Budhi Gandaki river.

2

Soti Khola to Namrung via Jagat and Deng (700m to 2,630m)

Follow the Budhi Gandaki gorge through Machha Khola, Jagat, and Deng, entering the restricted Manaslu Conservation Area and gaining altitude gradually over several days.

3

Namrung to Samagaon (2,630m to 3,530m)

Continue through Lho, with growing views of Manaslu itself, to Samagaon, the traditional gateway village to Manaslu Base Camp, with an acclimatization day built in.

4

Samagaon to Samdo and Larkya Peak Base Camp (3,530m to 4,900m)

Follow the Budhi Gandaki toward Samdo, near the Tibetan border, then branch to AltiPro's established camp below Larkya Peak, with gear issue and technical training.

5

Base Camp to Summit (4,900m to 6,249m)

Summit day follows basic glacier and snow terrain using crampons, ice axe, and rope, with no advanced technical climbing required. The descent can either retrace the approach to Samdo or continue over the Larkya La (5,106m) toward Bimtang, joining the classic Manaslu Circuit descent route.

Difficulty

How Difficult is the Larkya Peak Expedition?

Larkya Peak is graded Moderate, involving basic snow and glacier travel rather than sustained technical climbing. The main challenges are the long approach through the restricted Manaslu region, several consecutive days above 4,000m, and the altitude of the summit itself, rather than the climbing terrain. It is considered less demanding than Chulu East in the neighbouring Annapurna region, though the approach is notably longer and more remote.
