Lobuche West Expedition
Lobuche West (6,145m) — the higher, far less climbed of Lobuche's two summits, a serious expedition-grade South Ridge.
Expedition Overview
What is the Lobuche West Expedition?
Lobuche West stands at 6,145 metres in the Khumbu region of Nepal, the higher but far less climbed of Lobuche's two summits. While Lobuche East (6,119m) is classified as a standard NMA trekking peak and sees regular commercial traffic, Lobuche West is classified as a full expedition peak, with its permit issued separately by Nepal's Department of Tourism rather than the Nepal Mountaineering Association. Very few climbers attempt it each season, and AltiPro presents Lobuche West honestly as a serious, low-traffic technical objective rather than an extension of the standard Lobuche climb.
AltiPro's Lobuche West Expedition follows the same Everest Base Camp trail approach used for Lobuche East, through Namche, Tengboche, and Dingboche to Lobuche village, before establishing a dedicated Base Camp at approximately 4,950m beside a small lake below the mountain's glaciated southwest face, in the same general area used for Lobuche East but on a separate route. The South Ridge is the standard line: a glacier approach followed by steep snow and ice slopes to a narrow summit ridge. The expedition spans 20 days from Kathmandu to return.
Lobuche West is rated Serious to Advanced. AltiPro requires prior technical climbing experience, including comfort on steep snow, ice, and exposed ridge terrain, and does not recommend Lobuche West as a first Himalayan climb, nor as a natural add-on after Lobuche East. The two summits are separated by a deep notch ridge with a steep drop between them, and neither the terrain nor the permit system allows climbing both peaks on a single expedition.
About Lobuche West — Khumbu's Overlooked Expedition Peak
Lobuche West and Lobuche East share a name and a general location above Lobuche village, on the Everest Base Camp trail, but they are administered, climbed, and permitted as entirely separate mountains. Lobuche East is the Nepal Mountaineering Association's official trekking peak; Lobuche West requires a full expedition permit from the Department of Tourism, the same permit category used for much larger Himalayan giants, reflecting the genuinely higher technical demand of its South Ridge.
The two summits are connected by a long, technical ridge with a deep notch and steep drop between them, which makes a direct traverse between the peaks impractical and, under current permit rules, not permitted regardless. Climbers wanting to attempt both would need two entirely separate expeditions rather than a single combined trip.
From high on the South Ridge, climbers look directly across at Ama Dablam and Taboche, with Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse visible further up the Khumbu valley, and the Base Camp lake and Lobuche village laid out far below.
Why Choose AltiPro Adventures for Lobuche West?
Senior Climbing Sherpas on a Low-Traffic Route
Lobuche West sees only a small number of ascents each season, and AltiPro only runs the expedition with senior climbing Sherpas experienced on the South Ridge specifically, not simply Lobuche East guides applying broader Khumbu experience.
Small, Focused Teams
AltiPro caps Lobuche West expeditions at 6 climbers, allowing careful rope management on the exposed summit ridge and a pace suited to serious technical climbing.
Familiar Approach, Serious Objective
Because the approach follows the same well-established Everest Base Camp trail used for Lobuche East and Island Peak, logistics to Base Camp are straightforward, even though the climb itself is considerably more demanding than either.
Full Technical Equipment and Support
Base Camp services, fixed-rope equipment, and route-fixing gear are provided by AltiPro, along with cook staff at Base Camp. Climbers bring their own personal technical gear reflecting their experience level, which AltiPro reviews in advance.
Medical Support
A full medical kit at Base Camp and higher camps, with satellite communication for emergency coordination. The well-established Khumbu helicopter evacuation network provides rapid access to Lukla or Kathmandu if required.
Spring and Autumn Options
AltiPro operates Lobuche West in both spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), the two stable weather windows for the South Ridge.
The South Ridge Route (6,145 m)
The standard route on Lobuche West follows the classic Khumbu approach before branching to a dedicated Base Camp and climbing the mountain's South Ridge, a genuinely technical line distinct from Lobuche East's route.
Kathmandu to Namche Bazaar via Lukla (1,400m to 3,440m)
Flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, then trek through Phakding to Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital of the Khumbu, with a rest day for acclimatisation.
Namche to Dingboche via Tengboche (3,440m to 4,410m)
The trail climbs through Tengboche monastery and the Imja Valley to Dingboche, with a second acclimatization day before continuing to higher altitude.
Dingboche to Lobuche Village and Base Camp (4,410m to 4,950m)
Follow the Khumbu glacier moraine to Lobuche village, then continue to AltiPro's established Base Camp beside a small lake below Lobuche West's glaciated southwest face.
Base Camp to High Camp (4,950m to 5,600m)
The route crosses glacier terrain before a steep ascent over rock and snow leads to High Camp, positioned below the South Ridge proper, with fixed ropes placed on the more exposed sections.
High Camp to Summit (5,600m to 6,145m)
Summit day follows the South Ridge over steep snow and ice slopes to a narrow summit ridge, with a well-known false summit before the true top at 6,145m. The descent retraces the same line to High Camp and Base Camp.
How Difficult is the Lobuche West Expedition?
Lobuche West is graded as a serious expedition-category climb, involving sustained steep snow and ice on the South Ridge and a narrow, exposed summit section. It is consistently described by Khumbu operators as considerably more technical than Lobuche East, and is not attempted by beginner or intermediate climbers.
Best Season for the Lobuche West Expedition
Spring (March–May): Generally stable conditions on the South Ridge, though the Khumbu's weather can shift quickly at this altitude.
Autumn (September–November): The more commonly favoured window, with settled post-monsoon weather and firmer ridge conditions. October and early November are considered the preferred period. AltiPro operates both seasons, contact for current dates and route conditions.

Lobuche West Expedition — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about climbing Lobuche West with AltiPro Adventures.
What is the difference between Lobuche West and Lobuche East?
Lobuche East (6,119m) is a standard NMA trekking peak with a well-established commercial climbing scene. Lobuche West (6,145m), though slightly higher, is classified as a full expedition peak requiring a separate Department of Tourism permit, and is considerably more technical, with a South Ridge route that sees far fewer ascents each season.
Can I climb both Lobuche East and Lobuche West on the same trip?
No. The two summits are separated by a deep notch ridge with a steep drop, making a direct traverse impractical, and the separate permit systems do not allow combining both climbs into a single expedition. Each peak requires its own dedicated trip.
How difficult is Lobuche West?
Lobuche West is a serious expedition-category climb involving sustained steep snow and ice on the South Ridge and a narrow, exposed summit section with a false summit before the true top. It is considerably more technical than Lobuche East and not suitable for beginner or intermediate climbers.
What is the Lobuche West climbing cost?
AltiPro's full-service package includes the expedition permit, a liaison officer, Sherpa support, Base Camp and High Camp climbing equipment, and Base Camp services. Contact AltiPro for a current, detailed cost breakdown.
What technical skills are needed to climb Lobuche West?
Solid crampon and ice axe technique, comfort on steep, exposed ridge terrain, and fixed-rope ascent ability are all essential. AltiPro assesses each climber's technical background before confirming a Lobuche West booking.
How long is the Lobuche West expedition?
20 days from Kathmandu to return, including the Lukla flight, the approach through Namche and Dingboche, the technical climbing phase from Base Camp to High Camp, and the summit attempt on Lobuche West (6,145m).
What are the summit views like from Lobuche West?
The South Ridge and summit deliver close views of Ama Dablam and Taboche, with Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse visible further up the Khumbu valley, and the Base Camp lake and Lobuche village laid out far below.
What permits are required to climb Lobuche West?
An expedition permit issued by Nepal's Department of Tourism, Sagarmatha National Park entry, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit, and a Government Liaison Officer, mandatory for this category of expedition. AltiPro manages all permit applications from Kathmandu.
