Manaslu Circuit Trek
Manaslu Circuit Trek — Larkya La 5,160 m & Manaslu Base Camp | AltiPro Adventures
Trek Overview
What is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a 177 km restricted-area circuit around the eighth-highest mountain in the world — Manaslu (8,163 m / 26,781 ft) — through the Budhi Gandaki River gorge in Gorkha district, Nepal. The route crosses the legendary Larkya La Pass (5,160 m / 16,929 ft), the high point of the circuit and one of the most spectacular high-pass crossings available to non-technical trekkers in the Himalaya. A side trip from Samagaon adds Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m / 15,748 ft) directly beneath the southwest face of Manaslu, and the glacial Birendra Lake (3,980 m) to the itinerary — making it one of the most complete multi-experience treks in Nepal.
The circuit travels north from Soti Khola (730 m) through subtropical forest and cardamom plantations, ascending the dramatic Budhi Gandaki gorge past suspension bridges and roaring rapids, through increasingly Tibetan-influenced villages — Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, Samdo — before crossing Larkya La and descending to Dharapani on the Annapurna Circuit trail. The valley's Tibetan Buddhist culture — ancient gompas, prayer wheels, mani walls and yak herders — is preserved intact by the restricted-area permit system, which mandates a minimum group of two trekkers and a licensed guide. This is the finest alternative to the Annapurna Circuit for those seeking a full Himalayan loop with real altitude, real culture and far fewer crowds.
Three permits are required: Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP), Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the Dharapani circuit exit. AltiPro handles all three from Kathmandu before departure. Solo trekking is not permitted — the government-mandated guide requirement is both a safety policy and a cultural protection measure for this extraordinary valley.
Why Trek the Manaslu Circuit with AltiPro Adventures?
Beneath Mount Manaslu (8,163 m)
The side trip from Samagaon to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m) delivers a direct view of the southwest face of the eighth-highest mountain on Earth — the Manaslu Glacier filling the valley beneath. The additional stop at Birendra Lake (3,980 m), a deep-blue glacial lake nestled in moraine between Samagaon and Base Camp, turns the acclimatisation day into one of the most spectacular days of any Nepal trek.
Larkya La Pass — 5,160 m Crossing
The Manaslu Circuit culminates in the pre-dawn crossing of Larkya La (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) — one of the most celebrated high-pass crossings in Nepal. Leaving Dharmasala at approximately 4 AM under stars, the summit reveals a panorama of Manaslu, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal and Annapurna II that is among the finest mountain vistas achievable without technical climbing equipment anywhere in the Nepal Himalaya.
Budhi Gandaki Gorge Drama
The lower section of the Manaslu Circuit traverses the Budhi Gandaki River through one of Nepal's most dramatic gorges — suspension bridges crossing roaring glacial rapids, sheer rock walls rising hundreds of metres on both sides, waterfalls and a constantly shifting landscape that transforms noticeably with every day of ascent from the subtropical valley floor to the high Tibetan plateau.
Living Tibetan Buddhist Culture
The villages of Namrung, Lho, Samagaon and Samdo are not reconstructed heritage sites — they are living Tibetan Buddhist communities with active gompas, prayer wheels, mani walls and centuries of unbroken mountain culture. The restricted-area permit system has kept this valley exactly as it is, and AltiPro's guides are deeply versed in the cultural significance of every monastery and ritual you encounter.
A True Himalayan Circuit
The Manaslu Circuit is a complete loop — no retracing of steps, no shared valley, no repetitive terrain. The daily landscape varies from subtropical cardamom forest to high alpine meadows, glacial valleys and the 5,160 m pass. The circuit connects Soti Khola to Dharapani on the Annapurna Circuit — a point-to-point journey through two of Nepal's most dramatic river systems.
Pungyen Gompa & Samagaon Culture
Above Samagaon, the ancient Pungyen Gompa — with its painted murals and glacier views — is one of the finest monastery detours available on any Nepal trek. AltiPro integrates the Pungyen Gompa visit, the Manaslu Base Camp hike and the Birendra Lake loop into the Samagaon acclimatisation day, delivering a cultural and scenic experience unmatched on any other circuit in Nepal.
Manaslu Circuit Trek Route & Approach
The circuit begins with a 7–8 hour drive from Kathmandu to the Soti Khola trailhead (730 m) in Gorkha district, ascending the Budhi Gandaki gorge through lower subtropical forest and villages to Samagaon (3,530 m), then Samdo (3,860 m) and Dharmasala (4,460 m) before the pre-dawn Larkya La crossing (5,160 m). The descent reaches Dharapani (1,860 m) on the Annapurna Circuit, completing the 177 km loop. Total circuit: approximately 177 km.
Kathmandu → Soti Khola (730 m) → Machha Khola (930 m)
A 7–8 hour drive from Kathmandu via the Prithvi Highway and Arughat to the Soti Khola trailhead (730 m) in Gorkha district. The trek begins immediately in subtropical jungle with the sounds of the Budhi Gandaki River already audible. The first night is at Machha Khola (930 m), a short walk from the trailhead through cardamom plantations and dense forest.
Machha Khola → Jagat (1,340 m) — Restricted Zone Entry
Two days of outstanding gorge walking in the lower Budhi Gandaki valley — waterfalls, suspension bridges and flourishing subtropical vegetation. Jagat (1,340 m) is the first major permit checkpoint, where MRAP and MCAP documents are verified and entry to the restricted zone is confirmed. From Jagat, the character of the trail changes — the gorge deepens and narrows, and the first Tibetan architectural elements appear.
Jagat → Deng (1,860 m) → Namrung (2,630 m)
The trail above Jagat enters the true Budhi Gandaki gorge — sheer rock walls, strong river crossings on suspension bridges and increasingly remote terrain. Deng (1,860 m) marks the first step into serious wilderness. Namrung (2,630 m) is the first traditional stone Tibetan village, and it is here — above the valley walls — that the Manaslu massif first becomes fully visible: a defining and emotional moment of the circuit.
Namrung → Lho (3,180 m) → Samagaon (3,530 m) — Cultural Heart of the Circuit
Lho (3,180 m) sits above the gorge with a spectacular open view of Manaslu and Ngadi Chuli — prayer flags, chortens and an ancient monastery mark the full arrival into Tibetan Buddhist culture. The ascent to Samagaon (3,530 m), the largest village of the upper valley, follows alpine meadows and open ridge. Samagaon is the acclimatisation base — Guru Rilva Monastery, Birendra Lake, Manaslu Base Camp and Pungyen Gompa are all accessible from here.
Samagaon → Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m) & Birendra Lake (3,980 m)
The acclimatisation day from Samagaon delivers the two finest experiences of the circuit: the glacial Birendra Lake (3,980 m) — an extraordinary deep-blue lake in glacial moraine beneath the Manaslu Glacier — and Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m / 15,748 ft), directly beneath the southwest face of the eighth-highest mountain on Earth. The full round trip is 12–14 km and 7–9 hours. Pungyen Gompa above Samagaon is an alternative afternoon option.
Samagaon → Samdo (3,860 m) → Dharmasala (4,460 m) → Larkya La (5,160 m) → Bimthang (3,720 m)
The circuit's climax — two final preparation days and then the pre-dawn Larkya La crossing. Samdo (3,860 m) is the last permanent village. Dharmasala (4,460 m) is the high camp below the pass. Departure at approximately 4 AM delivers a 4–5 hour ascent on snow and rock to Larkya La (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) — Manaslu, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal and Annapurna II panorama — followed by a long descent to Bimthang (3,720 m). Total crossing: 10–12 hours.
Bimthang (3,720 m) → Dharapani (1,860 m) → Drive to Kathmandu
The final descent from Bimthang through rhododendron forest to Dharapani (1,860 m) on the Annapurna Circuit trail completes the 177 km Manaslu Circuit. From Dharapani, a 6–7 hour drive via Besisahar returns the group to Kathmandu. The circuit is complete — every kilometre of the landscape you now know from above passes beneath the vehicle on the way home.
How Difficult is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is rated moderate to challenging — 7/10 for overall difficulty. No technical skills, crampons or ropes are required. The most demanding element is the Larkya La crossing (Day 13) — a pre-dawn 10–12 hour day that begins at 4 AM and gains 700 m before reaching the 5,160 m pass summit. Sustained altitude above 3,500 m for multiple consecutive days (Namrung to Bimthang), the remoteness of the Restricted Area above Jagat, and basic infrastructure above Namrung require prior Himalayan trekking experience. AltiPro recommends the Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit as preparation. The government-mandated guide requirement is both a safety policy and a cultural protection measure.
Best Season for Manaslu Circuit Trek
Autumn (October–November): The primary Manaslu Circuit season — the clearest skies, the finest mountain views of Manaslu from Samagaon and Base Camp, and the most stable crossing conditions on Larkya La. October is the most popular month and permits fill quickly. The post-monsoon valley above Namrung is extraordinary in autumn clarity. AltiPro recommends booking October departures well in advance.
Spring (April–May): A strong secondary season with warming temperatures, rhododendrons in full bloom along the lower gorge trail, and good pre-monsoon weather stability for the pass crossing. April and May are the best spring months — March can be very cold above 4,000 m. The side trip to Manaslu Base Camp from Samagaon is especially rewarding in spring when surrounding peaks carry fresh snow.

Manaslu Circuit Trek — FAQs
Find answers to common questions about the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek suitable for beginners?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is not suitable for first-time Himalayan trekkers. The restricted area, Larkya La crossing at over 5,000 m, sustained high-altitude exposure and remote teahouse infrastructure above Namrung all require prior multi-day Himalayan trekking experience above 3,500 m. Trekkers who have completed Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit or a trek of similar scale are well prepared for the Manaslu Circuit. AltiPro recommends building Himalayan experience before attempting this route.
How many days is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The AltiPro Manaslu Circuit Trek runs 18 days, including arrival in Kathmandu, permit processing, drive to Soti Khola, the full circuit to Samagaon and Manaslu Base Camp, the Larkya La crossing, completion at Dharapani, drive back to Kathmandu, farewell dinner and buffer days. A 16-day version is available but removes one acclimatisation day at Samagaon — AltiPro does not recommend this reduction for trekkers without prior high-altitude experience.
What is the highest altitude on the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The highest point of the full Manaslu Circuit Trek is Larkya La Pass at 5,160 m / 16,929 ft — crossed on Day 13 of the AltiPro itinerary. Manaslu Base Camp itself sits at 4,800 m / 15,748 ft and is reached via a day hike from Samagaon. The high camp below the pass, Dharmasala, is at 4,460 m. Sustained walking above 4,000 m covers approximately 4–5 consecutive days of the circuit.
What permits are required for the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
Three permits are required: the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP) — the most critical, requiring a minimum of two trekkers and a licensed guide from a registered agency; the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) covering the full conservation area from Philim northward; and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) for the circuit exit through Dharapani. All three are processed by AltiPro in Kathmandu before the trek begins.
Can I trek the Manaslu Circuit solo?
No. The Government of Nepal prohibits solo trekking in the Manaslu restricted area. The MRAP requires a minimum of two trekkers and a licensed Nepali guide — enforced at permit checkpoints at Jagat, Samdo and Larkya Phedi. The regulation exists to protect both trekker safety and the culturally sensitive restricted zone. AltiPro can match solo applicants with other trekkers to meet the minimum group requirement.
What is the best season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
Autumn (October–November) is the primary season — the best visibility from Samagaon, the most stable Larkya La crossing conditions and the finest overall trek experience. Spring (April–May) is a strong secondary season with rhododendron blooms on the lower gorge trail and good pre-monsoon stability. AltiPro fully operates both seasons. October permits are in high demand — book early.
What is Birendra Lake and is it worth visiting?
Birendra Lake (Birendra Tal) is a glacial lake at 3,980 m fed by meltwater from the Manaslu Glacier, located between Samagaon and the Manaslu Base Camp trail. It can be reached in 2–3 hours from Samagaon. The lake is deep blue, set in glacial moraine beneath high peaks — one of the most beautiful natural features on any Nepal trekking circuit. AltiPro integrates the Birendra Lake detour into the Samagaon acclimatisation day alongside the Manaslu Base Camp hike.
How difficult is the Larkya La Pass crossing?
Larkya La (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) connects the Budhi Gandaki valley with the Marsyangdi valley and is the high-point of the Manaslu Circuit. Departure from Dharmasala is at approximately 4 AM. The ascent takes 4–5 hours on snow and rock to the pass summit, followed by a long descent to Bimthang — a total of 10–12 hours of walking. No technical skills or crampons are required under normal autumn or spring conditions. The summit panorama — Manaslu, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal and Annapurna II — is among the finest achievable without technical climbing anywhere in Nepal.
What accommodation is available on the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The Manaslu Circuit is a full teahouse trek from Soti Khola to Dharapani. Comfortable teahouses operate at all major stops: Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, Samagaon, Samdo and Bimthang. Above Namrung, rooms are simpler with shared bathrooms — but always warm. Only basic shelter is available at Dharmasala (4,460 m), the pre-pass high camp. Charging stations and hot showers are available at most stops for a fee. Sleeping bags rated –15°C are essential above Namrung.
What is the Manaslu Circuit Trek cost?
Cost depends on group size, departure date and service level. All AltiPro packages include MRAP, MCAP and ACAP permits, TIMS Card, Kathmandu hotel, private jeep Kathmandu–Soti Khola and Dharapani–Kathmandu, licensed guide and porter (Soti Khola to Dharapani), full board teahouse accommodation throughout, pulse oximeter monitoring above 3,500 m and emergency helicopter evacuation standby. Trek Machha Khola → Jagat (1,340 m / 4,396 ft) — Enter Restricted Zone |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Jagat |
|
| The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River through increasingly dramatic gorge scenery — waterfalls, suspension bridges and flourishing subtropical vegetation on both sides. Jagat (1,340 m) is the official restricted area entry point, where MRAP and MCAP permits are checked and registered. From Jagat, the gorge narrows and deepens, and the first Tibetan architectural elements begin to appear. 5–6 hrs walking.
5
|
Trek Jagat → Deng (1,860 m) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Deng |
|
| Dramatic gorge walking above Jagat — sheer rock walls rising hundreds of metres above, suspension bridges crossing the roaring Budhi Gandaki, and waterfalls tumbling from unseen ridges above. The Tatopani hot springs are accessible near Jagat for those who want to soak tired legs at the end of the day. Deng (1,860 m) is the first major staging point in the genuinely remote interior of the Budhi Gandaki valley. 5–6 hrs walking.
6
|
Trek Deng → Namrung (2,630 m / 8,629 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Namrung |
|
| The trail above Deng enters proper Tibetan-influenced terrain — traditional stone architecture, mani walls and prayer flags appear with increasing frequency. Namrung (2,630 m) is the first traditional Tibetan stone village on the circuit, and it is here above the valley walls that the Manaslu massif makes its first full appearance. The moment of first seeing Manaslu above the gorge rim is one of the defining emotional experiences of the circuit. 5–6 hrs walking.
7
|
Trek Namrung → Lho (3,180 m / 10,433 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Lho |
|
| The trail climbs from Namrung through increasingly alpine terrain to Lho (3,180 m) — a beautifully positioned village above the gorge with a spectacular open view of Manaslu and Ngadi Chuli. An ancient monastery and mani walls frame the view of the north face of Manaslu from the village edge. Alpine meadows above the treeline mark the complete transition from subtropical valley to high Himalayan landscape. 3–4 hrs walking.
8
|
Trek Lho → Samagaon (3,530 m / 11,581 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samagaon |
|
| The ascent to Samagaon (3,530 m) — the largest village in the upper Budhi Gandaki valley and the cultural and geographical centre of the entire Manaslu Circuit. Guru Rilva Monastery is visible above the village on the approach. From Samagaon, the full southwest face of Manaslu fills the northern horizon. Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake and Pungyen Gompa are all accessible from here on acclimatisation days. 3–4 hrs walking.
9
|
Manaslu Base Camp Day Hike (4,800 m / 15,748 ft) & Birendra Lake (3,980 m) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samagaon |
|
| The finest day of the Manaslu Circuit. The day hike from Samagaon to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m / 15,748 ft) is 12–14 km round trip and 7–9 hours total. The glacial Birendra Lake (3,980 m) — an extraordinary deep-blue lake in ancient moraine beneath the Manaslu Glacier — is reached en route. Manaslu Base Camp itself sits directly beneath the southwest face of the eighth-highest mountain on Earth. As an alternative afternoon option, the centuries-old Pungyen Gompa above Samagaon offers exceptional painted murals and glacier views. Return to Samagaon overnight.

|
Rest Day at Samagaon (3,530 m) — Acclimatisation |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samagaon |
|
| A mandatory acclimatisation rest day at Samagaon before the high-altitude section ahead. AltiPro guides lead optional short hikes on surrounding ridges above 3,700 m to reinforce altitude adaptation. Visit Guru Rilva Monastery for the morning puja (if schedules allow) and rest well for the final push toward Larkya La. Altitude monitoring with pulse oximeter throughout the day.
11
|
Trek Samagaon → Samdo (3,860 m / 12,664 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samdo |
|
| A relatively short day from Samagaon to Samdo (3,860 m) — the last permanent village on the circuit before Larkya La. The Tibetan border is visible to the north from Samdo's ridge, and trans-Himalayan trade culture is palpable in the architecture and daily life of the community. The short day allows maximum rest and energy conservation ahead of the two demanding days leading to the pass crossing. 3–4 hrs walking.
12
|
Trek Samdo (3,860 m) → Dharmasala / Larkya Phedi (4,460 m / 14,633 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge/Camp, Dharmasala |
|
| A deliberately short day from Samdo to Dharmasala (4,460 m / Larkya Phedi) — the high camp positioned directly below Larkya La. Maximum energy preservation is the sole objective today. Arrive early, hydrate well, eat a full dinner and rest. Departure tomorrow is at approximately 4 AM. Accommodation at Dharmasala is basic — a simple lodge with communal sleeping — but adequate for one night before the pass. 3–4 hrs walking.
13
|
Larkya La Pass (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) Crossing → Bimthang (3,720 m) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Bimthang |
|
| The most dramatic and defining day of the Manaslu Circuit — the pre-dawn Larkya La crossing. Departure from Dharmasala at approximately 4 AM. The ascent takes 4–5 hours on snow and rock to the Larkya La summit (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) — Manaslu, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal and Annapurna II fill the horizon in a panorama available at no other point on the circuit. The long descent to Bimthang (3,720 m) through rhododendron forest takes a further 4–6 hours. Total crossing: 10–12 hours. This is the physical and emotional climax of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
14
|
Trek Bimthang (3,720 m) → Dharapani (1,860 m / 6,102 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Dharapani |
|
| The final descent of the Manaslu Circuit — a long but celebratory walk from Bimthang through rhododendron forest, past waterfalls and farmland, all the way down to Dharapani (1,860 m) on the Annapurna Circuit trail. The circuit is complete at Dharapani — 177 km from Soti Khola, through one of Nepal's most culturally and geographically extraordinary valleys. Congratulations are in order. 6–7 hrs walking / ~1,860 m descent.

Buffer Days — Kathmandu (Weather or Road Contingency) |
Breakfast |
Hotel, Kathmandu |
|
| Buffer days built into the AltiPro itinerary to account for possible weather delays on the Larkya La crossing, road disruptions on the Kathmandu–Gorkha highway, landslides (common during monsoon shoulder periods), or any other unforeseen delay. If no buffer days are consumed, these days are free in Kathmandu for last sightseeing, shopping or rest. AltiPro always includes buffer days in the Manaslu Circuit — the variable Larkya La weather window requires it.
