Manaslu Circuit Trek
Manaslu Circuit Trek — Larkya La 5,160 m & Manaslu Base Camp | AltiPro Adventures
Trek Overview
What is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of Nepal's great restricted-area wilderness circuits, encircling the world's eighth-highest mountain — Manaslu at 8,163 metres — through the remote Nubri and Tsum valleys of the Gorkha district. AltiPro's 16-day itinerary begins at Soti Khola and follows the Budhi Gandaki River north through deep gorges, dense forest, and Tibetan Buddhist villages, crossing the Larkya La pass at 5,160 metres and descending via Bimthang to Dharapani in the Annapurna Conservation Area. The circuit is Nepal's answer to the Annapurna Circuit — a complete mountain ring with dramatic ecological and cultural transitions — but with a fraction of the visitor numbers, and the towering north and east faces of Manaslu dominating the entire upper circuit.
AltiPro's fully guided circuit includes all restricted area and national park permits, personal porter for each trekker, all teahouse accommodation and meals, and transport between Kathmandu and Soti Khola. Maximum 12 trekkers per group. Rated Challenging — the Larkya La crossing at 5,160m is sustained and demanding but non-technical.
About Manaslu and the Circuit
Manaslu (8,163m) is the eighth-highest mountain in the world and a defining landmark of the Gorkha Himal. Its north and east faces — seen from Samagaon and Samdo on the circuit — are among the most impressive mountain walls visible from any trekking route in Nepal. The Nubri valley communities of Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo maintain a traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture largely unchanged by tourism. The Birendra Tal glacial lake at Samagaon can reflect Manaslu perfectly in clear conditions. The Larkya La (5,160m) is one of the most spectacular high-altitude passes in Nepal, with views across the Annapurna range on the western descent.
The Manaslu Circuit requires a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit and the services of a licensed guide — regulations that have kept the circuit significantly less crowded than comparable routes and preserved the authentic character of the Nubri valley experience.
Why Choose AltiPro Adventures for the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
All Restricted Area Permits
AltiPro holds all required restricted area permits for the Manaslu Circuit — Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, and TIMS card — all included in the package price.
Proper Acclimatisation
The itinerary includes two acclimatisation days at Samagaon (3,530m) with a high hike to the Birendra Tal and optional Manaslu Base Camp viewpoint — essential preparation for the Larkya La crossing.
Personal Porter for Each Trekker
Every trekker has a dedicated personal porter. AltiPro maintains above-market wage standards, insurance, and proper equipment for all porters throughout the 16-day circuit.
Small Group Size
Maximum 12 trekkers per departure for personalised guiding and flexible pacing — essential on a route where teahouse capacity can be limited in the upper Nubri valley villages.
Complete Circuit Transport
Transport from Kathmandu to Soti Khola and from the descent endpoint at Dharapani back to Kathmandu — fully organised by AltiPro, covering both ends of the circuit.
Authentic Remote Experience
The Manaslu Circuit's restricted area status limits visitor numbers and preserves the cultural integrity of the Nubri valley. AltiPro's circuit gives trekkers the full transition from subtropical gorge to Tibetan plateau to alpine pass — one of the most complete single-trek experiences in Nepal.
Manaslu Circuit Trek — 16-Day Route Overview
The circuit follows the Budhi Gandaki north through the Nubri valley to Samagaon and Samdo, crosses the Larkya La, and descends via Bimthang to Dharapani — a complete 360-degree circuit of the Manaslu massif.
Days 1–3: Kathmandu → Soti Khola (710m) → Jagat
Drive from Kathmandu to Soti Khola then begin trekking north up the Budhi Gandaki through the subtropical lower gorge — dramatic canyon terrain with dense forest and the first Tibetan-influenced villages.
Days 4–7: Jagat → Deng → Namrung → Lho → Samagaon (3,530m)
The Budhi Gandaki gorge deepens dramatically above Jagat before the valley opens at Lho with the first views of Manaslu's northwest face. Samagaon is the main Nubri valley village — traditional Tibetan stone houses, the Birendra Tal glacial lake, and direct views of Manaslu from the village gompa.
Days 8–9: Samagaon Acclimatisation — Birendra Tal + Manaslu BC Viewpoint
Two essential acclimatisation days at Samagaon. The Birendra Tal hike and the optional Manaslu Base Camp viewpoint trek (both above 4,000m) prepare trekkers for the Larkya La and deliver outstanding views of Manaslu's northeast face.
Days 10–12: Samdo (3,875m) → Dharmasala (4,460m) → Larkya La (5,160m) → Bimthang
The Larkya La crossing is the physical centrepiece of the circuit — a long pre-dawn departure from Dharmasala, 8 to 10 hours to the pass and the western descent through spectacular alpine scenery to Bimthang, the first settlement below the pass on the Marsyangdi side.
Days 13–16: Bimthang → Tilche → Dharapani → Kathmandu
Rapid descent through alpine meadows to the tree line, then through the lower Marsyangdi valley to Dharapani where the Annapurna Conservation Area road meets the circuit end for the drive back to Kathmandu.
How Difficult is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
The Manaslu Circuit Trek is rated Challenging. The primary challenge is the Larkya La crossing at 5,160m — a sustained high-altitude day requiring solid acclimatisation from the Samagaon rest days. The trail through the Budhi Gandaki gorge is occasionally exposed with suspension bridge crossings. No technical climbing is required. Remoteness and sustained multi-day effort at altitude are the main difficulty factors.
Best Season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek
Autumn (October–November): The primary season — post-monsoon clarity delivers outstanding Manaslu views and the most stable Larkya La conditions. October is the peak month.
Spring (March–May): Excellent alternative — clear conditions with the trail fully open after winter. Fewer crowds than October.
Manaslu Circuit Trek Cost
Fully guided Manaslu Circuit — all restricted area permits, transport, teahouse accommodation, meals, guide, and personal porter included.

Manaslu Circuit Trek — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Manaslu Circuit Trek with AltiPro Adventures.
Why is the Manaslu Circuit a restricted area?
The Nepal government designates the Manaslu region a restricted area to preserve the cultural heritage and ecological integrity of the Nubri and Tsum valley communities. A licensed guide is mandatory for all trekkers.
How hard is the Larkya La crossing?
The Larkya La at 5,160m is a long, demanding day — typically 8 to 10 hours from Dharmasala to Bimthang. AltiPro's acclimatisation days at Samagaon are essential preparation. The crossing is non-technical but physically demanding.
How long is AltiPro's Manaslu Circuit?
16 days from Kathmandu return, including all trekking, transport, and acclimatisation days.
When is the best time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
October and November for the clearest conditions and most stable Larkya La weather. March and April are excellent alternatives with fewer crowds.
What permits are required?
A Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, Manaslu Conservation Area Permit, and TIMS card are all required. AltiPro arranges all permits as part of the package.
Is prior trekking experience required?
Yes — prior experience above 4,000m is recommended. The Larkya La crossing and sustained multi-day effort at altitude require solid fitness and some prior high-altitude experience.
How does the Manaslu Circuit compare to the Annapurna Circuit?
The Manaslu Circuit is more remote, sees fewer trekkers, and requires a licensed guide. The cultural experience of the Nubri valley Tibetan Buddhist communities and the views of Manaslu's north face are distinctive highlights not found on the Annapurna Circuit.
What is accommodation like on the circuit?
Established teahouses throughout the circuit offer comfortable rooms and good food even in the upper valley villages of Samagaon and Samdo. AltiPro selects the best available teahouses at each stage.

Drive Kathmandu → Soti Khola (730 m); Trek → Machha Khola (930 m) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Machha Khola |
|
| A 7–8 hour drive from Kathmandu via the Prithvi Highway and Arughat to the Soti Khola trailhead (730 m) in Gorkha district. The Budhi Gandaki River is heard before it is seen. The first walk into cardamom jungle and subtropical forest leads to the overnight camp at Machha Khola (930 m). The outside world is already far behind.
4
|
Trek Machha Khola → Jagat (1,340 m / 4,396 ft) — Enter Restricted Zone |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Jagat |
|
| The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River through increasingly dramatic gorge scenery — waterfalls, suspension bridges and flourishing subtropical vegetation on both sides. Jagat (1,340 m) is the official restricted area entry point, where MRAP and MCAP permits are checked and registered. From Jagat, the gorge narrows and deepens, and the first Tibetan architectural elements begin to appear. 5–6 hrs walking.
5
|
Trek Jagat → Deng (1,860 m) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Deng |
|
| Dramatic gorge walking above Jagat — sheer rock walls rising hundreds of metres above, suspension bridges crossing the roaring Budhi Gandaki, and waterfalls tumbling from unseen ridges above. The Tatopani hot springs are accessible near Jagat for those who want to soak tired legs at the end of the day. Deng (1,860 m) is the first major staging point in the genuinely remote interior of the Budhi Gandaki valley. 5–6 hrs walking.
6
|
Trek Deng → Namrung (2,630 m / 8,629 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Namrung |
|
| The trail above Deng enters proper Tibetan-influenced terrain — traditional stone architecture, mani walls and prayer flags appear with increasing frequency. Namrung (2,630 m) is the first traditional Tibetan stone village on the circuit, and it is here above the valley walls that the Manaslu massif makes its first full appearance. The moment of first seeing Manaslu above the gorge rim is one of the defining emotional experiences of the circuit. 5–6 hrs walking.
7
|
Trek Namrung → Lho (3,180 m / 10,433 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Lho |
|
| The trail climbs from Namrung through increasingly alpine terrain to Lho (3,180 m) — a beautifully positioned village above the gorge with a spectacular open view of Manaslu and Ngadi Chuli. An ancient monastery and mani walls frame the view of the north face of Manaslu from the village edge. Alpine meadows above the treeline mark the complete transition from subtropical valley to high Himalayan landscape. 3–4 hrs walking.
8
|
Trek Lho → Samagaon (3,530 m / 11,581 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samagaon |
|
| The ascent to Samagaon (3,530 m) — the largest village in the upper Budhi Gandaki valley and the cultural and geographical centre of the entire Manaslu Circuit. Guru Rilva Monastery is visible above the village on the approach. From Samagaon, the full southwest face of Manaslu fills the northern horizon. Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake and Pungyen Gompa are all accessible from here on acclimatisation days. 3–4 hrs walking.
9
|
Manaslu Base Camp Day Hike (4,800 m / 15,748 ft) & Birendra Lake (3,980 m) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samagaon |
|
| The finest day of the Manaslu Circuit. The day hike from Samagaon to Manaslu Base Camp (4,800 m / 15,748 ft) is 12–14 km round trip and 7–9 hours total. The glacial Birendra Lake (3,980 m) — an extraordinary deep-blue lake in ancient moraine beneath the Manaslu Glacier — is reached en route. Manaslu Base Camp itself sits directly beneath the southwest face of the eighth-highest mountain on Earth. As an alternative afternoon option, the centuries-old Pungyen Gompa above Samagaon offers exceptional painted murals and glacier views. Return to Samagaon overnight.
10
|
Rest Day at Samagaon (3,530 m) — Acclimatisation |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samagaon |
|
| A mandatory acclimatisation rest day at Samagaon before the high-altitude section ahead. AltiPro guides lead optional short hikes on surrounding ridges above 3,700 m to reinforce altitude adaptation. Visit Guru Rilva Monastery for the morning puja (if schedules allow) and rest well for the final push toward Larkya La. Altitude monitoring with pulse oximeter throughout the day.
11
|
Trek Samagaon → Samdo (3,860 m / 12,664 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Samdo |
|
| A relatively short day from Samagaon to Samdo (3,860 m) — the last permanent village on the circuit before Larkya La. The Tibetan border is visible to the north from Samdo's ridge, and trans-Himalayan trade culture is palpable in the architecture and daily life of the community. The short day allows maximum rest and energy conservation ahead of the two demanding days leading to the pass crossing. 3–4 hrs walking.
12
|
Trek Samdo (3,860 m) → Dharmasala / Larkya Phedi (4,460 m / 14,633 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge/Camp, Dharmasala |
|
| A deliberately short day from Samdo to Dharmasala (4,460 m / Larkya Phedi) — the high camp positioned directly below Larkya La. Maximum energy preservation is the sole objective today. Arrive early, hydrate well, eat a full dinner and rest. Departure tomorrow is at approximately 4 AM. Accommodation at Dharmasala is basic — a simple lodge with communal sleeping — but adequate for one night before the pass. 3–4 hrs walking.
13
|
Larkya La Pass (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) Crossing → Bimthang (3,720 m) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Bimthang |
|
| The most dramatic and defining day of the Manaslu Circuit — the pre-dawn Larkya La crossing. Departure from Dharmasala at approximately 4 AM. The ascent takes 4–5 hours on snow and rock to the Larkya La summit (5,160 m / 16,929 ft) — Manaslu, Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal and Annapurna II fill the horizon in a panorama available at no other point on the circuit. The long descent to Bimthang (3,720 m) through rhododendron forest takes a further 4–6 hours. Total crossing: 10–12 hours. This is the physical and emotional climax of the Manaslu Circuit Trek.
14
|
Trek Bimthang (3,720 m) → Dharapani (1,860 m / 6,102 ft) |
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner |
Lodge, Dharapani |
|
| The final descent of the Manaslu Circuit — a long but celebratory walk from Bimthang through rhododendron forest, past waterfalls and farmland, all the way down to Dharapani (1,860 m) on the Annapurna Circuit trail. The circuit is complete at Dharapani — 177 km from Soti Khola, through one of Nepal's most culturally and geographically extraordinary valleys. Congratulations are in order. 6–7 hrs walking / ~1,860 m descent.

Drive Dharapani → Kathmandu — Farewell Dinner |
Breakfast, Farewell Dinner |
Hotel, Kathmandu |
|
| A 6–7 hour drive from Dharapani via Besisahar and Dumre back to Kathmandu. The landscape that you now know intimately from the trail above passes beneath the vehicle window. Transfer to hotel in Thamel. Farewell dinner with the AltiPro team in the evening — Manaslu Circuit Trek certificate presented. A fitting celebration of one of Nepal's greatest trekking circuits.

Buffer Days — Kathmandu (Weather or Road Contingency) |
Breakfast |
Hotel, Kathmandu |
|
| Buffer days built into the AltiPro itinerary to account for possible weather delays on the Larkya La crossing, road disruptions on the Kathmandu–Gorkha highway, landslides (common during monsoon shoulder periods), or any other unforeseen delay. If no buffer days are consumed, these days are free in Kathmandu for last sightseeing, shopping or rest. AltiPro always includes buffer days in the Manaslu Circuit — the variable Larkya La weather window requires it.
