Trek Overview

What is the Rolwaling Trek?

The Rolwaling Trek is one of Nepal's most remote and spiritually significant valley treks, travelling into the secluded Rolwaling Khola valley beneath the sacred peak of Gauri Shankar (7,134m) and the Tso Rolpa glacial lake at 4,580 metres. AltiPro's 16-day itinerary drives east from Kathmandu to Charikot then climbs into the Rolwaling valley through Simigaon, passing the traditional Tamang settlement of Beding and the high alpine community of Na before reaching Tso Rolpa — one of the highest and most visually dramatic glacial lakes in Nepal. The valley has the character of a beyul — a hidden, blessed valley of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition — and feels genuinely remote and undisturbed in a way that the more visited Himalayan valleys do not.

The Rolwaling Trek receives only a handful of trekking groups each year. AltiPro's full-support approach makes the valley accessible to experienced trekkers: fully guided with Rolwaling-experienced leader, personal porter for each trekker, teahouse accommodation in the lower valley and camping in the upper valley above Na, all meals, all national park permits and TIMS, and complete transport. Maximum 12 trekkers. Rated Challenging.

About the Rolwaling Valley

The Rolwaling Khola drains west from the Trakarding and Ripimo Shar glaciers beneath the Rolwaling Himal range along the Nepal-Tibet border. The valley is enclosed by Gauri Shankar (7,134m) — a twin-summited peak considered the dwelling of Parvati and Shiva in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and one of the most sacred mountains in the Himalayas — and Melungtse (7,181m), one of the least-visited major peaks in Nepal. Beding (3,688m) and Na (4,180m) are the only permanent settlements in the upper valley, with small Sherpa communities maintaining yak herding and Buddhist traditions largely unchanged by outside contact.

The Tso Rolpa glacial lake at 4,580m is the centrepiece of the upper valley — a turquoise high-altitude lake backed by the Trakarding glacier and the peaks of the Rolwaling Himal. The lake has grown significantly due to glacial melt and is one of the most closely monitored glacial lakes in Nepal.

Why Choose AltiPro Adventures for the Rolwaling Trek?

Rolwaling Valley Expertise

AltiPro's team has specific Rolwaling experience — including correct acclimatisation staging, navigation above Tso Rolpa, and the remote camp management required in the upper valley above Na where teahouse facilities end.

Full Camping Support

AltiPro carries full camping equipment for all upper valley stages above Na — proper high-altitude tents, cooking gear, and food sufficient for the remote sections where no teahouse facilities exist.

Personal Porter for Each Trekker

Every trekker has a dedicated personal porter. AltiPro maintains above-market wages, insurance, and proper equipment for all porters on this demanding and remote route.

Small Group Size

Maximum 12 trekkers per departure — essential for remote camp management and personalised guiding on one of Nepal's least-visited trekking valleys.

True Himalayan Wilderness

The Rolwaling valley sees only a handful of trekking groups each year. For experienced trekkers seeking genuine Himalayan wilderness far from the main trekking corridors, the Rolwaling is in a category of its own.

Sacred Valley Experience

The Rolwaling is a beyul — a hidden, blessed valley of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition — with the sacred twin summit of Gauri Shankar above the valley and the working Buddhist community at Beding, offering a depth of cultural and spiritual experience that few treks in Nepal can match.

Rolwaling Trek — 16-Day Route Overview

The route drives east from Kathmandu to Charikot, climbs into the Rolwaling valley through Simigaon and Beding, and follows the upper valley to the Tso Rolpa glacial lake and the moraine viewpoints beneath Gauri Shankar and the Rolwaling Himal peaks.

1

Days 1–3: Kathmandu → Charikot → Simigaon → Beding (3,688m)

Drive east from Kathmandu to Charikot and begin climbing north into the Rolwaling valley through the forest and suspension bridges above the Rolwaling Khola to Beding — the lower permanent settlement with a working Sherpa community and a important Buddhist lhakhang.

2

Days 4–6: Beding → Na (4,180m) — Acclimatisation

Above Beding the valley narrows and the alpine character begins at Na (4,180m), the upper settlement beneath the glaciers. Acclimatisation days at Na allow adjustment before the upper valley stages and the optional high hikes above the settlement toward the glacier moraine.

3

Days 7–10: Na → Tso Rolpa (4,580m) → Moraine Viewpoints

From Na, camping begins. The route climbs through high pasture to the Tso Rolpa glacial lake — a turquoise high-altitude lake backed by the Trakarding glacier, with Gauri Shankar, Melungtse, and the Rolwaling Himal peaks visible from the moraine viewpoints above the lake.

4

Days 11–16: Descent — Na → Beding → Simigaon → Charikot → Kathmandu

Descent retraces the Rolwaling valley trail to Charikot for the road return to Kathmandu, passing through the same forest and Sherpa villages on the way down.

How Difficult is the Rolwaling Trek?

The Rolwaling Trek is rated Challenging. The sustained remoteness, camping requirements above Na, and altitude at Tso Rolpa (4,580m) and the moraine viewpoints (4,700–4,800m) make this a demanding route. Trail navigation in the upper valley requires care. No technical climbing is involved. The primary challenges are remoteness, fitness, and acclimatisation.

Rolwaling Trek — Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Rolwaling Trek with AltiPro Adventures.

How remote is the Rolwaling Trek?

Extremely remote — only a handful of trekking groups visit the Rolwaling valley each year. The upper valley above Na has no teahouse facilities. AltiPro carries full camping equipment for all upper valley stages.

How high does the Rolwaling Trek reach?

The Tso Rolpa glacial lake at 4,580 metres is the main destination. The moraine viewpoints above the lake reach approximately 4,700 to 4,800 metres.

Is prior trekking experience required?

Yes. AltiPro recommends prior experience above 4,000m and strong general fitness. The remoteness and camping requirements make this unsuitable as a first Himalayan trek.

How long is AltiPro's Rolwaling Trek?

16 days from Kathmandu return, including all transport, trekking, and upper valley camping days.

When is the best time for the Rolwaling Trek?

April and May for spring conditions and rhododendron blooms. October and November for the clearest post-monsoon skies and peak views of Gauri Shankar and the Rolwaling Himal.

What is the Tso Rolpa?

The Tso Rolpa is a high-altitude glacial lake at 4,580m, fed by the Trakarding glacier and backed by the Rolwaling Himal peaks. One of the most dramatic glacial lakes in Nepal and the primary destination of the trek.

What is Gauri Shankar?

Gauri Shankar (7,134m) is a twin-summited peak on the Nepal-Tibet border — one of the most sacred mountains in the Himalayas, considered the dwelling of Shiva and Parvati, and one of the last major Himalayan peaks to be climbed (first ascent 1979).

Can I combine the Rolwaling with the Everest region?

Yes — the classic Tesi Lapcha pass route crosses from the Rolwaling valley into the Khumbu at Thame. This high-altitude crossing (5,755m) requires technical equipment and is a serious mountaineering objective that AltiPro can organise as an extension.
